The Herdwick is a breed of domestic sheep native to the Lake District of Cumbria in North West England. Herdwick sheep are widely considered to be the most hardy of all Britain’s breeds of hill sheep. The fleece of Herdwick sheep is coarse with a good deal of kemp and is a hard wearing wool. It's approx 40 microns with a staple length of 85-90mm. The wool is also an excellent natural insulator, it's hard wearing, non fading and completely natural.
Interesting Note: The children's author Beatrix Potter kept and bred Herdwick sheep, and served as acting president of the breed association for a time. She won a number of prizes for Herdwick ewes at shows across Cumbria. Upon her death in 1943, she gave fifteen farms, an approx total of 4,000 acres, to the National Trust, and per her instructions all continue to graze Herdwick flocks.
